Conservation Efforts
Discover our conservation initiatives dedicated to safeguarding the Kalahari’s fragile ecosystem. At Deception Valley Private Reserve, our primary environmental objective is to restore previously cultivated and hunted areas to their natural, untamed state. In 2017, Bart and his team took a significant stride by acquiring Deception Valley Lodge, the region’s first and most historic lodge, which was reclaimed by nature three decades earlier. Initially spanning three former cattle farms covering 15,000 hectares, the lodge expanded in 2019 with the addition of five adjacent farms encompassing 28,000 hectares. By removing fences, they seamlessly merged these lands, establishing one of Botswana’s largest privately owned game conservancies, spanning an impressive 43,000 hectares. Our ongoing efforts include restoring waterholes, dismantling old cattle troughs, and creating winding bush trails to facilitate wildlife movement. Through careful bush management, we ensure year-round grazing, even in the driest periods, while maintaining a delicate balance between open plains, woodlands, and diverse habitats across the reserve.
Species reintroduction
Join us in our mission to safeguard endangered species as we embark on a groundbreaking initiative to reintroduce various specie to our esteemed conservancy. In recent years, Deception Valley Private Reserve has dedicated extensive efforts to restore the natural balance for predators within our pristine landscape. We take immense pride in the flourishing populations of free-roaming predators, including lions, leopards, and swift cheetahs, alongside the rare and critically endangered brown hyena. Moreover, our conservation efforts have nurtured thriving populations of aardvark, aardwolf and the highly endangered pangolin.
As we look ahead, our commitment remains steadfast to continue reintroducing species, fostering biodiversity, and restoring the captivating wilderness of the reserve to its former glory. Join us on this transformative journey as we preserve nature’s wonders for generations to come.
Sustainability
At Deception Valley Private Reserve, sustainability isn’t just a target; it’s integral to our ethos. Committed to reducing our ecological footprint, we’ve adopted solar power systems, implemented waste reduction strategies, and even cultivate our own produce. Currently, we’re exploring innovative approaches to transition our game drive vehicles to electric power, further lessening our environmental impact.
In our comprehensive conservation strategy, we acknowledge that the primary threat to wildlife arises from human-wildlife conflict and habitat degradation due to overpopulation. As human activities encroach upon natural habitats, conflicts escalate, endangering both wildlife and livelihoods. In the 1960s, the Hainaveld, our reserve’s home within the Northern sector of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, was designated as cattle farms, resulting in fragmented habitats and disrupted migratory routes.
By embracing sustainable methods and advocating for harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife, we strive to address these challenges.
